On the initiative of ICOMOS (International Council on Monuments and Sites) the International Symposium onFacadism and Urban Identity was held in Paris since 28 to 30 January 1999. The Sympsoium was jointly organised by the French Ministry of Culture andCommunication-France, Department of Architecture and Heritage and ICOMOS International.
Facadism is a phenomenon which has emerged during our generation as a result of the speculative pressures on real estates. It is a way of the treatment of historic buildings which conserves nothing but the facade while neglecting the spatial structures behind which are demolished to make way for a new construction satisfying the needs of contemporary architectural intentions. The phenomenon has not developed in the same way everywhere. The question is why it has developed only in some cities. The analysis of facadism raises a crucial issue for the guardians of heritage- what heritage is to be preserved in the city and how far should this preservation be taken, what measures can be taken to control facadism, what decisions should be carried outand at what level of authorities, if there is apossibility to envisage a common European response- these were the main tasksto be solve. The Paris symposium tried to elaborate some clear propositions on these issues. The subject of facadism should be solved parallely within all concerned aspects - historical, social and cultural, legal, economic and technological.
The support from the Raphael programme covered mainly the acommodation and travel expenses of the participants.

Gartenarchitektur (A), Institute of Advanced Architectural Studies, Landescapes and Gardens (UK), ICOMOS- USA, Schweizerische Gesellschaft für Gartenkultur (Switzerland), Slovensky ústav pamiatok a krajiny (Slovak Republic), ICOMOS-Denmark, ICOMOS-Turkey.

International Symposium ICOMOS-IFLA 1997 „Landscape Heritage“ was held in Prague, Lednice-Valtice and cesky Krumlov from 7 to 12 September 1997.
The Symposium was jointly organised by the ICOMOS Czech National Committee and ICOMOS-IFLA(International Committee of Historic Gardens and Sites).Among the partners were the State Institute for the Protection of Historic Monuments in Prague, Institute for the Protection of Historic Monuments in Brno and Institute for the Protection of Historic Monuments in ceske Budejovice. (ICOMOS-International Council on Monuments and Sites).
The project was recommended by UK National Committee ICOMOS and Polish National Committee ICOMOS.
The meeting was organized twenty years after the symposium on historic gardens held in Prague and Kromeriz in 1977. In the past twenty years the conception of the conservation of historic gardens and landscape has developed from the conservation of individual gardens and parks to the preservation and conservation of large manmade landscape areas.
This trend is pan-European and universal and is based on a comprehensive view of the historical function of landscape, its use and preservation in the future, too, in co-ordination with the creation, and protection of the environment. This approach has been acknowledged at the international level represented by the Council of Europe, UNESCO, The European Community, ICOMOS, IFLA and other international organisations. The notion of cultural landscape has also been incorporated among the criteria for the selection of the sites for including in the UNESCO World Heritage List.
Discussion on „landscape heritage“ raises a number of questions to be solved. There is no problem how to identify and evaluate the best preservated parts of historic landscape. The most important and most complex issue is how such parts of the landscape can be preserved for the future and how should it be managed and treated.
During the discussions at this international symposium and the study trips of its participants, Czech specialists have tried to acquaint 101 specialists from 16 countrieswith the value of the historical landscape of Bohemia and Moravia and its specific features.
The support of the Raphael Programme to this symposium was one third of the total budget.
